Visiting a place is the experience of some exciting activities. It is the unusual experience which comes from the activities full of courage, excitement and joy. It never thinks about the result. It may result positively which gives some benefits and negatively which hurts and make losses. However, adventurous people never mind the result and continue their adventure. Adventure exists in everything however it differs in the people’s mind
But it’s important that we treasure, patronize and give importance to the places in our province Southern Leyte before we go to other places in the country or even abroad. Here are some of the places that are inside my bucket list that I really want to visit:
Limasawa Island
This Island holds the claim of being the Cradle of Christianity in Asia. Limasawa is just too perfect to pass up and it’s so near my home. But until the time machine is invented, Southern Leyte will always celebrate and take pride that almost 400 years ago something really special happened in this beautiful island.. an event that paved the way for the Spanish Era.
Because of the island’s rich history the local government together with the Church developed a part of the island (Brgy. Magallanes) to become a pilgrimage site who wants to visit the origins of our religion. It is where you can find the Shrine of the First Mass and just 450 steps above is the site strongly believed where Magellan planted the first cross.
Monte Cueva (Maasin City, Southern Leyte)
Maasin the capital city of Southern Leyte. One of the musts see place in Maasin is located up in the hills at Brgy Rizal , 2km from Maasin City, the Monte Cueva Shrine. The Monte Cueva is a small cave which was developed by its original owners into a shrine with a quaint chapel inside .
The shrine is located at an elevation of 172 meters above sea level overlooking Maasin City. Monte Cueva shrine is not for those who are afraid of heights nor for those with weak knees because before you reached the Monte Cueva you must conquer first the laborious climb up the hill via a zigzagging concrete stairway consisting of more than 550 concrete stairways.
Agas-Agas Bridge
The mountainous Agas-Agas section of the Pan-Philippine Highway in Southern Leyte is prone to landslides during heavy rains, much more when a typhoon strikes the province. The bridge was constructed in 2006 to avoid the troublesome section and cut down the driving time for motorists.
The Agas-Agas Bridge zipline, now known as “Zipline Leyte”, opened in April 2011. The twin zipline, one of the longest in the country at 880 meters (2,890 feet), glides diagonally above the bridge and the riverine below it. A Provincial Pavilion complete with a parking lot and food and souvernir kiosks has been constructed atop of a promontory overlooking the deep ravine of the nearby gorge.
Macrohon’s Fish Sanctuary
Just 15 minutes from Maasin City and along Macrohon’s national highway the fish and bird sanctuary is one of the most accessible tourist spots in Southern Leyte. Upon reaching the sanctuary you will hear the mating calls of wild ducks and sea cranes and see the beach’s inviting swimming area.
If you have no fear of heights you can climb the observation tower and have a panoramic view of the mangrove forests which protect both sides of the sanctuary and of the pristine reefs which is only one kilometer away.
If you want a budget friendly eco-adventure you need not look far as Barangay Sta. Cruz’s Molopolo fish and bird sanctuary is your ticket to instant eco-gratification.
Maasin City Zoo and Adventure Park
Maasin Zoo and Adventure Park is located in Camp Danao Forest Park, 15 km away from Maasin City, the capital city of Southern Leyte.
The sprawling forested area has a man-made lake and contains one of Southern Leyte’s tourism hubs. One of the specialties of Maasin Zoo and Adventure Park is that the animals are not kept in cages but separated from the spectator by “natural” barricade.
In the near future, God’s willing, I know I will be able to visit all of these places.
